heART for Nepal | Artworks to help Nepal Earthquake Survivors

The recent news of the 7.8 Magnitude earthquake that shook Nepal to its knees felt like a deja vu of the ferocity that Supertyphoon Haiyan brought to the Philippines on November 8, 2013. For me, tears brimmed in my eyes.

As we saw the online coverage of various news groups we were urged to think of something to do - to help. The aftershocks and aftermath of this natural catastrophe has rendered death tolls rising up to more than 7,000.Hundreds and thousands of houses and establishments were destroyed across many districts in the country. Literally flattening villages near the epicenter of the earthquake.Transportation and utilities are disrupted, thus life for the citizens are currently challenging.

So this is our proposal: LET US HELP THEM.

Compelled, I proposed to Ciro (Roberto Cipollone) if we could sell online a set of his artworks from which proceeds will be directly donated to the fund-raising endeavors of the youth from the Youth for A United World - Philippines. It is moving for us to know that Haiyan Survivors are now trying to pay it forward by taking action to help the victims of the Nepal Earthquake.

Ciro on the other hand, was willing to help so he allowed me to make a simple catalog of artworks that you can directly purchase online which will be called: “heART for Nepal”

We invite you to work  with us! Every share or tweet of this blogpost can give us more chances of reaching out to those who would like to purchase artworks and help at the same time the Nepalese community.

For every artwork purchased, we would be able to send money to provide food, water and clothing for the victims. Funds raised will be donated to Nepal through the Youth for a United World.

The Passion of the Christ | Ciro's art renditions

Yesterday, I was looking around for some Arte Sacra (Sacred Art) made by Ciro just in time for the celebration of the Holy week. I was intending to find crosses and the like but I was surprised to have stumbled upon a set of artworks titled Passione di Christo (Passion of the Christ).

Finding these photos in the archives felt like digging a treasure chest :)

In this set of artworks, Ciro told me that he wanted to depict Christ's passion by using zappe (hoes). These agricultural tools, combined with nails, wires, bolts, washers, and others; effectively depicts that which Jesus went through.

You may scroll through these photos and share them to your friends to set the atmosphere of solemnity in this season of Lent.

Have a solemn and reflective celebration of Lent everyone.

5 things I have learned from Ciro

1. See beauty in everything, even in the ugliest things.
  • Spending time with Ciro has always amazed me, he turns trash to treasure. He has this Midas Touch that turns old to gold.  Every now and then we go to heaps of refuse that have thousands of things in them. Ciro chooses things that can be transformed into something new. Recycling and Reusing things has always been his forte. It is amazing how his eyes have been accustomed to seeing beauty - it's a good thing to remember because we often focus on the bruto (ugly) parts of life.
  • Oftentimes, we also visit the nearby Arno river to scour for drift wood. These (sometimes) rotting logs, branches, and twigs still are useful for Ciro. By some sort of magic and technical expertise, Ciro brings these dead pieces of wood to life! (I was telling him that he might be the real Dr. Frankenstein, and he rolls his eyes!) He would cut these wood appropriately, then we will clean them, then he will put terra (clay) and form houses, bridges, towers, etc. on top of them. The outcome is always fantastic!

Insider's preview of La Bottega Di Ciro

Buon Giorno!

Today let me guide you to a mini-tour about the life inside the bottega (shop) of Ciro.

This place is really interesting because it houses a lot of Ciro's artworks and it is where his creative spirit pushes the imagination to the limit.

Ciro has perfected his craft through this small little house and people from all over the world, flock to the La Bottega di Ciro (The shop of Ciro) with eyes of wonder and curiosity.

The first day I arrived here, my head was turning 360 degrees, it was a visual feast. True enough,  I discover a new thing every single day that I stay here. Ciro has approximately created 16,000 unique artworks, up to date.

How did he do that?
It makes me wonder as well, and I think that would be a good topic to write about in the blog posts that will follow.

So welcome, let's get inside the La Bottega Di Ciro!

Konnichiwa! Ciro's Travel to Tokyo, Japan

Konnichiwa!

Back in 2013, Ciro went to Kyoto, Japan along with some friends to hold an exhibit about a fusion of western and oriental-inspired artworks. It was a 12-day visit that made a lasting impression for both Ciro and the guests.
His trip to the land of the rising sun was memorable. He met new friends and got acquainted with interesting stuff like Ramen, Sushi, Sumo wrestling, Sake, Samurai, Katana, Kanji, etc.

When an Italian-Artist meets the Japanese Culture it results in a magnificent display of art.

The exhibit in Kyoto showcased the curiosity of Ciro on the beauty that Japanese people appreciate. Bringing his artworks to Kyoto, he created a rapport with the Japanese curators and guests, all the more expressing fully, Belleza (beauty) through "Art".

Fashion Clothing From 1987I guess the progression of the list caught you off guard, yes, the third to the last event was one of the most important. (I was born). Lol.

The world was moving through a transition in technology to get most of the finer things in life. In the Philippines, it was also an interesting period. It was a year after the fall of a dictatorship.

So what's the segue?
I bet you figured, hahaha!

Well, allow me to take you back to 1987 through the lenses of the artworks that Ciro did during that time.

Indeed, he was contributing a lot to the preservation of fine art, that is, on 1987 he had a mostra (exhibit) in the beautiful coastal city of Desenzano in Lombardy, Italy.

In this post, I will show you never-before-seen photos (a familiar phrase circus hosts say, sorry I had to write that, it creates some sort of flavor. hahaha!) of Ciro along with Chiara Lubich (Founder of the Focolare Movement) in Desenzano.

An Art Appetizer

Have you seen something like this before?

La Scarpata di Ciro (Roberto Cipollone)
La Scarpata by Ciro

Yah, really cool right?

If you have a fancy for shoes, you would easily notice that the base of this artwork called "La Scarpata" is an old Forma de La Scarpa (Shoe Last) used in shoemaking. On top of that, Ciro created a Paessaggio (Landscape) using teracota (clay).

First time I saw this, I was really blown away. For a year, I have been working together with shoemakers in Carcar, Cebu and shoe lasts like this were common to my eyes and 'lo and behold, someone uses this material for another purpose: Art.

Frequently Asked Question - What is this blog about?

I owe you an introduction of myself.

I am Edward.
Rome & Me

I just survived the onslaught of a Supertyphoon, Haiyan, in my home city ,Tacloban City, Philippines last 2013. Months later after that, I was invited to spend a year of study in Italy - meet people of different cultures and learn more about Ecumenism and the emerging Economy of Communion.

Five months since September (2014), I am now fortunate to be working side-by-side as an apprentice with the very interesting Artist: "Ciro". (Pronounced as 'Chee-Roh').

Am I an artist too? No.
Have I attended an Art School before? Nope. Most that I know about art, I took from Disney's "ART ATTACK". Lol.

Indeed, after Supertyphoon Haiyan wrecked our city in the Philippines, art descended down to the bottom of my priority list in life. I saw a city stripped naked, bent, butchered, destroyed, devastated, made ugly.

But upon arriving here in Italy, meeting Ciro became a rediscovery how art moves the soul into a certain dimension that breathes happiness and wonder, curiosity and madness, excitement and frustration - a steadfast feeling of being human, of being alive.
